Town Hall Meeting Scheduled for Big Basin Water Company Customers

The court-appointed receiver for Big Basin Water Company, Inc., Serviam by Wright LLP, together with Monica Martinez, Santa Cruz County Supervisor for District 5, will host a hybrid-format Town Hall meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 at 6pm to update customers on the company’s efforts to restore and stabilize water service in the region. Attorney and Project Manager Nicolas L. Jaber will lead the presentation and respond to questions from community members.

Background: Service and Infrastructure Challenges

Big Basin Water Company serves a portion of the Santa Cruz Mountains and has faced a range of operational issues in recent years. These include repeated service interruptions, aging infrastructure, regulatory compliance concerns, and the impacts of major disasters.

The 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire severely damaged infrastructure in the area — transmission lines, tanks and supply mains were among the hardest hit —putting additional strain on a system already under financial duress. Following a series of regulatory and operational challenges, the California Public Utilities Commission placed the utility into receivership so that a neutral entity could assume management, stabilize the system and chart a path toward reliable service.

What to Expect at the Town Hall

  • An update from the court receiver on the current status of operations, repairs, regulatory compliance and financial health.
  • A question-and-answer segment giving customers direct access to receiver leadership.
  • Discussion of next steps and potential longer-term options, such as system upgrades, funding strategies or consolidation possibilities.

For customers of Big Basin, this Town Hall offers an opportunity to hear directly from the entity now managing the utility and to engage with county leadership. Given the history of service disruptions and infrastructure uncertainty, being informed is critical.
